人間の歴史、科学、哲学、芸術、文化の膨大な絵を網羅したバティア・スーターの大著『Parallel Encyclopedia』の続編となる一冊。バティア・スーターの作品は、拾い集めた既存のイメージを直感的に新たな文脈に置き換えることで、意外性のある反応や多義的な意味の広がりを生み出します。スーターの制作に通底するテーマには、過去のイメージがどのように「アイコン化」され、時間を経て新たな意味や感情を帯びていくか、という関心があります。スーター自身は次のように語っています。「私はテーマや特徴ごとに画像を集め、それらが置かれる場所や関係性によって、互いにどう影響し合うのかを探っています。この本をつくる過程では、イメージを動かしていくうちに、目の前で物語のような流れが立ち現れてきました。」
